The Black Monolith
The Reikwald Forest
The Reikwald Forest extends into the foothills of the Grey Mountains, and is a favorite haunt of The Empire’s outcasts. The forest is ideal bandit country, as the main communications artery of the river Reik, and the road which parallels it, pass beneath its leaves.
The Reikwald Forest’ is the section of the Empire’s Great Forest that extends into Reikland. The forest, due to Reikland being urbanized and prosperous, is being logged heavily to feed the Province’s shipbuilding industry. Darker things still hide in the deeper recesses of it, though. The Grauenburg Forest is technically also a part of the Reikwald.
The forest extends trough most of the Reikland, it is ancient and dangerous. Forests possess economic importance. They aren’t farmland, and this results in lower taxes and populations. Increasing population will fell trees slowly reducing and pushing the forests back. War and/or plague will reduce the local population causing a gradual recovery of the forests. It is said by superstitious locals that the forest comes back faster than anywhere else and that logging wood is necessary to prevent towns and farms from being annexed by the verdant wood.
Forests influence military tactics and strategy; they are a rather unsuitable terrain for cavalry (especially for heavy cavalry). Artillery is also disadvantaged due a restricted line of sight. Forests are ideal terrain for ambushes; travellers, isolated army units and sometimes even whole armies can become victims of such a fate.
